The Most Energy Efficient Window Treatments

If you’re looking for ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home without making major structural modifications or financial investments, you should look no further than your windows. Regardless of the quality or age of your windows, they’re one of your home’s primary sources of energy loss. According to, 10-20% of your home’s energy is lost through the windows, and you make up for it by using additional oil, gas, or electricity to heat or cool your home.

So how do you minimize heat transfer through your windows? The easiest way is by choosing the right window treatments. The following energy-efficient shades, blinds, and drapery can significantly reduce energy loss through your windows.

  1. Dual shades. Dual shades are white on one side (to reflect heat) and black on the other (to absorb it), and can be reversed in accordance with the season. Take note however, that these shades are only effective when drawn all day.
  2. Honeycomb shades. Honeycomb shades trap air between cellular pockets, which prevents the transfer of heat through the window, allowing your home to stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
  3. Lined drapery. If you prefer a window treatment that’s as much about form as it is about function, consider drapery in a closed-weave or heavy fabric like wool, velvet, or damask, backed with an insulating lining.
  4. Wooden window blinds. The slats in window blinds make them less insulating than shades or drapery, but because they can be partially opened or closed while drawn, they’re a good option if you want added insulation, but don’t want to completely block out natural light to get it. Wooden blinds can also be paired with drapery for extra insulation when needed.
