When it comes to curtains, there are so many choices available that choosing a pair that fits just right can seem overwhelming at times. Finding the right size of curtains doesn’t have to be difficult when you follow these easy tips when making your selection.
Choosing the Length
The length of your curtains is especially important, and will more than likely depend on the type of room you have. A good guideline to follow when choosing curtain length is that the more formal your room is, the longer your curtains should be. As such, you may want to choose floor length curtains for a formal dining room, but hang curtains that come to the sash in your living room or game room. For a romantic bedroom, allow the bottom of your curtains to pool gently on the floor beneath your window.
Covering Flaws
The right sized curtains can also help disguise any flaws in your windows. If your windows are too short, hang your rod slightly above the window frame to help lengthen it, and choose curtains that come to at least the bottom of the sash. For longer windows, hang a valance at the top with a single panel at the bottom to help break the length up somewhat.
If your windows are too wide, hang more than one panel across the width to help narrow it somewhat. Just be sure to hang an even number of panels if you plan on pulling the curtains back somewhat; otherwise, doing so may present an awkward appearance.
Widen narrow windows by hanging the curtains so that their edges come just to the inside of the frame, leaving as much glass exposed as possible. If the idea of open windows bothers you, add a sheer panel to the glass to provide a bit of coverage.
